07 Tips to create a sustainable garden

When constructing my house, one of my main expectations was to create a stunning and sustainable garden to complement it. We successfully built a beautiful home and also established a sustainable garden that enhances its overall beauty.

I and my wife had decided to go to sustainable living in my home and I wanted to apply the same theme to our garden.

I wanted to share my experience with you as 10 tips that you must follow when applying sustainability to your home garden.

Use native plants

Among the best ways to reduce the carbon footprint is to manage and reduce the plants’ maintenance. That is why you must choose the best-adapted plants for your garden.

The most adapted plants to your garden are native plants. Those plants would know how to tolerate adverse conditions and survive with limited resources. Incorporating native plants in your garden reduces the amount of water and resources needed to maintain them. It will also support local wildlife.

What I did was to have a look at the plants that existed in the normal environment. Frost, I listed them according to their purposes. Fruit plants, landscaping plants, vegetables, and leafy plants, and I included several more rows. Then after I included them in a rough map. Then I launched the implementation.

I Implemented water conservation techniques for the garden

Water is an essential feature in the garden. You must manage it without involving outside factors. I used a rain barrel to collect rainwater for irrigation which was useful for me in the dry season. Also, installing a drip irrigation system, or using mulch to retain moisture in the soil was useful for me to conserve water.

Other than those two, I promoted planting new species in the garden in cooler months. Since the establishment stress is less for the plants, I could save water.

I Practiced organic gardening

One of the most popular sustainable gardening trends is organic gardening.  This means avoiding the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers for the garden. I avoided making any harm to the environment and local wildlife.

First I tested the Soil Ph level and followed the procedures to make the soil neutral. Then I followed the application of natural fertilizers such as compost.

When it comes to pest and disease control methods, I referred to natural methods such as natural resistance, neem seed extraction, and promoting natural enemies of the pests. I discovered that crop rotation, cover cropping, and handpicking are good for natural pest and disease control methods.

Incorporated vertical gardening

I wanted to do something tricky and beautiful at the same time. In that case, I got into vertical gardening.  I found it a great way to maximize space and reduce the amount of water and resources needed to maintain a garden. Also, it beautified my entire garden.

My garden did have any trouble with the spacing. But, I felt that the vertical tower had increased the efficiency of the space.

Although there was not much to appreciate at the beginning with its beauty, I had got a beautiful vertical cultivation after 04 weeks.

I got into using sustainable gardening tools

I could find many tools available today that are made from sustainable materials. Also, they had been designed to minimize their impact on the environment. The tools that I chose must have come with easy-to-replace parts as well.

The tools I took to use were trowels, pruners, and rake which not only require gasoline for working but would not leave any carbon footprint on the soil. I could find some tools that were made from bamboo or FSC-certified wood materials which increased the sustainability of my garden.

I avoided the use of plastic in my garden and showcased some banners as reminders.

Promoting the biodiversity

Promoting the natural living styles in the garden or the bio-diversity is also a better way to improve the sustainability of my garden. I encouraged the growth of different types of plants, flowers, and trees in the garden. I expected to attract pollinators, birds, and other beneficial insects.

Another thing I followed under the same category is to create different systems. I used the topography and the available elements in the garden to promote biodiversity. In the end, I could attract different types of living beings.

I discovered that the soil health had increased to a better position on the second test. Since the decomposition and the decaying had increased due to increased biodiversity, I did not have to bother about fertilization.

I allowed People to Come

One of the things I paid attention was to allowing anybody to come into my garden. It was a place that implemented sustainable gardening where several convincing things had been tried. I could teach people about sustainable living using the garden. Also, some people started early and learned more things than me. I could learn from them more things about sustainable living.
